KIX96 St. Jude Radiothon at the Savannah Mall
KIX96 (WJCL) tunes in to help save the lives of children fighting cancer and other deadly diseases. Radio station KIX96 (WJCL) will host its annual Country Cares for St. Jude Kids radiothon, Thursday and Friday, August 19 and 20, from 7AM-7PM live from Center Court at the Savannah Mall.
The radiothon raises money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, one of the world's premier centers for the research and treatment of cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Local listeners interested in supporting St. Jude can pledge a donation by calling 1-888-271-4673 or by visiting WJCL's Web site.
At St. Jude, families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance, and no child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. Like most organizations, St. Jude has not been immune to the effects of the economy. Now more than ever, St. Jude needs the support of country music listeners to continue its mission of finding cures and saving children.
The radio fundraising program began in 1989 after Randy Owen, lead singer of the music group ALABAMA, met St. Jude founder Danny Thomas. Since its inception, Country Cares has grown to be one of the most successful radio fundraising events in the nation with more than 200 radio station partners raising more than $365 million in pledges.
"I'm so proud that the music that helped me put bread on my table and have a career is the same music and the same fans, to a certain degree, that have made incredible contributions to Country Cares," Owen said. "I look forward to the future. I absolutely know we're making a difference in a very positive way."
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. For more information, please visit

Let’s Dance, Savannah!
Coastal Georgia health professionals are raising awareness with a repeat of the successfully hot “Let’s Dance, Savannah!“ at Savannah Mall on Saturday, July 24, 2010. The public is invited to Savannah Mall’s Center Court on Saturday, July 24th. Free dance demonstrations and classes, healthy snacks, blood pressure checks, BMI measurements, blood glucose testing and bone density scans.
Dance For Your Health During "Let's Dance, Savannah!"
Tired of the same, old exercise routine? t might be time to try dancing your way to a healthier lifestyle. That's why the Coastal Health District is sponsoring "Let's Dance, Savannah!" on Saturday, July 24th, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Savannah Mall's Center Court. The day of free dance demonstrations and classes is being offered to encourage dancing as a legitimate form of exercise and to teach people about the importance of cardiovascular health.
"For too many people, exercise feels like a chore," said Cristina Gibson, Director of Health Promotion & Disease Prevention for the Coastal Health District. "We all know we should exercise, but it can be hard to stay motivated to climb onto a treadmill. Add a busy schedule, and exercise often gets marked off the 'to do' list."
But dancing can be a lot of fun - and a great form of exercise.
"If you're feeling burned out on the traditional exercise routines, start dancing," said Gibson. "You get your heart rate up, your body moving, but it doesn't feel like hard work. It feels like fun."
Heart disease is the number one killer of American women. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 500,000 women die each year of cardiovascular disease. But regular exercise (including dancing), a healthy diet, and controlling your blood pressure can greatly reduce your risk.
The celebration will feature ZUMBA, ballroom dance, line dancing, African dance, Lindy Hop, Egyptian belly dance, ballet, and more!
The event will also include blood pressure screenings by the Community Cardiovascular Council, blood glucose testing, nutritional assessments by the Chatham County Health Department's WIC Nutrition Services Program and Body Mass Index (BMI) & bone density scans provided by the Health Science Students of Armstrong Atlantic State University. Information on the signs and symptoms of stroke & heart attack and healthy snacking will be provided. Visitors will also receive details about dance opportunities through Chatham County's network of dance organizations and have the opportunity to win door prizes including an iPod, WiiFit, YMCA memberships, Savannah Sand Gnats Family Four Packs, plus much more!

28th Annual Orchid Show Presented by the Deep South Orchid Society
Savannah Deep South Orchid Society Hosts Annual Show at Savannah Mall!
Orchids lovers from near and far will descend upon the Savannah Mall Center Court April 24-26 for the Deep South Orchid Society's 28th Annual Show. This year's theme is A Shower of Orchids. The event will feature competitions in 128 different classifications as well as lavish orchid displays and commercial vendors.
According to Sandra T. Hardy, 2010 Show Chair, "There is something for everyone at the show. Competitions for the passionate orchid enthusiast to displays and vendors for the more casual attendee." Hardy continues, "It would be a wonderful place to shop for Mother's Day. All our vendors will be able to show you how to keep your orchids blooming year after year." This year the Society expects over 200 entries to the show competition. The show will also have an Orchid Doctor on call Saturday and Sunday to offer free diagnoses and treatment for problem plants or those that have stopped blooming.
The Society was founded 35 years ago by six local orchid lovers. Their primary focus is on education of members, with a little fun thrown in. "Orchids can be very addictive," said Gail Matthews, one of the group's original founders. Matthews is the owner of LiveOak Orchids, located at the Mall. She also keeps six greenhouses at her home filled with the plants.
Orchids have over 35,000 known species that grow in the wild, plus hundreds of thousands of known hybrids, so there is always something to learn. "Right now we are learning to clone orchids," said Matthews. With space donated to the group from the Mall, some of the members have been learning to create an exact replica of an existing orchid using stem propagation. This process requires sterile gloves, masks and working in a temperature-controlled environment known as a clean station. Currently the clones are potted in sterilized test tubes until they grow leaves. "If everything goes well we will end up with an exact clone of the plant we began with," continues Matthews. "Our success rate is currently around 60%, but we expect that to get higher as we learn more." An additional benefit of the Mall space is the new library the group will be opening to Society members for the first time at the show.

St. Baldrick’s Benefit at Savannah Mall on March 27, 2010
The Fifth Annual St. Baldrick’s Celebration on March 27, 2010 from 2:00pm-5:00pm in Center Court!
Nine-year-old Paul Elliott has shaved his head bald every March since 2005 to support cancer research. On Saturday, March 27 the Savannah Mall will help him do it again by playing host to Savannah's fifth annual St. Baldrick's Celebration. The event will be held in the Mall's Center Court area starting at 2 p.m. Each year friends and family pledge money to see event participants shave their heads in support of cancer research.
Elliott's mom, Heide Elliott, is the event coordinator and an oncology nurse with Backus Children's Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center. She and Paul have been passionate about the cause ever since she first got involved in 2005. In 2007 she became the event's coordinator. "Last year we shaved over 89 heads including 16 women. This year our goal is to raise $20,000," said Elliott. Childhood cancer patients and their parents often become guest barbers, giving them a way to make a difference and have some fun for a very serious situation.
Savannah Mall has hosted the event for the last two years since it outgrew a local pub. According to Senea Crystal, "We are so proud to host again this year. We have this big open space and are happy to share it to help raise money and awareness for a great cause. Plus, we've got great support from the local media". Fox28's Jesse Blanco will emcee the event and E93, Mix 102.1 and KIX96 will be broadcasting live. Also, Angela Beasley and The Puppet People will be there with puppets, face painting and other kid's activities.
About St. Baldrick's
St. Baldrick's is a national organization that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. The funds raised via community events, go to the Children's Oncology Group. The COG is a network of more than 5,000 hospitals whose collaboration and research have turned childhood cancer from a virtually incurable disease to one with an overall 78% cure rate. Most hospitals that treat childhood cancer are members of the group including St. Jude's Hospital and locally Backus Children's Hospital. In return for grant monies these organizations submit all their data in treating childhood cancer to the COG which helps move the research farther faster. For more information visit
http://www.curesearch.org

WSAV Wheel of Fortune Casting Call on March 20 and 21 at Savannah Mall!
WSAV Wheel of Fortune Casting Call on March 20 and 21 at Savannah Mall’s Center Court from 1PM-5PM!
What is the Wheelmobile?
The Wheelmobile is a 39-foot Winnebago that tours nationwide in search of contestants for television's #1 game show. The Wheelmobile team is coming to be a part of the Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade and to find contestants in Savannah!
Where and when will the Wheelmobile event take place?
The Wheelmobile event will take place during two special days of contestant searches.
When: Saturday & Sunday, March 20th & 21st from 1 PM - 5 PM
Where: Savannah Mall*
14045 Abercorn Street
Savannah, GA 31419
* The event will take place in Savannah Mall's Center Court area. In order to get an application, please enter through the Ruby Tuesday's entrance and follow the signage to the Wheelmobile application line.
We will begin handing out applications one hour before each show begins. Shows will begin at 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, and 4:00 PM, with each show lasting about an hour. There is no need to arrive hours in advance of the event. Everyone who attends the event will be able to submit an application. We will select participants to come to the stage and audition via a random draw.
How does it work?
- There are three Wheel of Fortune shows during each day of a Wheelmobile event. Each show lasts approximately one hour.
- Everyone who comes to a Wheelmobile event will receive a color-coded application. The color of the application tells you what time the game you are eligible for will begin.
- Fill out your application and drop it in a nearby receptacle. Just before show time, we will put all the applications in a big golden drum that sits on the stage.
- When the show begins, our Wheelmobile host will pick applications at random from the drum and call participants up to the stage (in groups of five) to play the game.
- On stage, we will do a brief interview with each contestant and play a version of the Wheel of Fortune Speed-Up Round.
- Each person who comes up to the stage will be evaluated as a potential contestant for the show. At the end of the puzzle all contestants on stage will be awarded a prize. (Wheel of Fortune hats, t-shirts and duffle bags are just some of the stuff you might win.)
- Wheel of Fortune is looking for good game players who are energetic, enthusiastic and fun. This is your opportunity to shine. Show us what you've got!
- After the Wheelmobile event in your area has been conducted, we will choose the people we believe will be the best candidates for the show (based on their overall performance on stage) to take part in a final round of auditions. These final auditions will take place in the Savannah area within a few months after our last event date.
- We will get as many people up to the stage as we can. However, we know there will be many more folks at our Wheelmobile events than we can possibly audition. For this reason, we will reserve some slots in the final auditions for those individuals who attended Wheelmobile events but did not make it up to the stage. After all Wheelmobile events have been conducted, we will draw a number of names at random from all the applications we receive in the Savannah area for these slots.
- If you are invited to the final auditions, you will receive a letter or email within a few weeks of our last Wheelmobile event.
What are the contestant eligibility requirements?
You must be at least 18 years of age to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune.
You are not eligible to be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune if you work for, or are related to, anyone who works for Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Sony Pictures Television Inc., Sony Pictures Television International, Quadra Productions, Inc., CBS Television Distribution Group, game show prize suppliers, WSAV-TV (including its advertisers and affiliated radio stations), or any TV stations or networks broadcasting Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy!.
You are not eligible to appear on Wheel of Fortune if you have appeared on another game show, dating-relationship show or reality show in the last year or three game shows, dating-relationship shows or reality shows in the last ten years.
You are not eligible if you have appeared on any version of Wheel of Fortune, including "Teen Week," "Wheel 2000," or the daytime version of the show.
All expenses incurred while interviewing and (if selected as a contestant) appearing on the show, including airfare, hotel, etc. are the responsibility of the applicant.
A contestant audition does not guarantee a spot on the show. The applicant understands that Wheel of Fortune is under no obligation to use him/her as a contestant. It is entirely at the producer's discretion.
REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS SHALL BE MADE FOR PERSONS WITH PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS AND/OR DISABILITIES.
WATCH WHEEL OF FORTUNE WEEKNIGHTS AT 7:00 PM ON WSAV.

Coach Wayne Winter Show on March 6, 2010
Coach Wayne Gymnastics presents the 2010 Winter Show at the Savannah Mall on March 6th from 2:00pm-4:00pm at Center Court at Savannah Mall!
The yearly shows are open to the public, and vital to our program and the progress of our students.
First, it allows our students to show off the hard work that they invest in every gymnastics class they attend. They can show their parents, their peers, and the public how they can bend, twist, and roll their bodies into astounding positions that are sure to wow the audience. This kind of response from on-lookers provides students with heightened self-esteem. We carefully prepare each student for the show, so that they will be able to execute their skills as perfectly as possible in an entirely positive atmosphere.
Secondly, it provides both students and non-students with a healthy dose of inspiration. Because our program is mobile, many of our students attend gymnastics class in their own neighborhood, with their friends and classmates. The Winter Show allows the students to meet and observe students from other locations, so that they will have a better sense of Coach Wayne Gymnastics as a whole. We not only want our coaches to motivate the students, but also for the students to motivate each other.
Finally, we want to show everyone, especially non-members, how fun gymnastics can be! We also hope to broadcast the benefits of gymnastics---flexibility, coordination, and a level of fitness that will make our students exceptional at whatever sport they pursue, whether it be basketball or baseball, cheerleading or soccer.
Coach Wayne Gymnastics is determined to let the community experience how beneficial, educational, and entertaining gymnastics can be for everyone--adults and kids.
There will be an "after party" at the Savannah Mall gym after the Center Court performance where kids can keep playing at the gym and parents can socialize...cookies and drinks will be served. For more information call Coach Wayne Gymnastics at 1-888-548-4545 or go

The "Patriot Chopper" custom motorcycle is being brought in from New York to kick up the cool factor in support of a serious message: prevent illegal racing (street racing), aggressive/reckless driving and impairment.
Inside Savannah Mall beginning the week of January 25, 2010, will be one of three of the National Guard-sponsored custom-built bikes featured on the Orange County Choppers's Discovery Channel's "American Chopper" show in 2007. WHO: For more information contact CopsCAIR.org founder and organizer, Jim Griner (912) 308-2566,
Cops Against Illegal Racing (C.A.I.R.) is a not-for-profit corporation that was created in 2008 by law enforcement to prevent illegal racing (street racing), aggressive/reckless driving and impairment.
WHY: "Racing to Save Lives through Intervention, Cooperation and Education." All proceeds benefit the Cops C.A.I.R. Campaign. Based on the alarming fact that vehicle crashes are the #1 cause of death for teenagers between the ages of 16-20, a group of Savannah area law enforcement officers decided to take proactive steps in an effort to reduce vehicle related crashes that result in injury, property damage and fatality. As such, they believe that "Intervention, Cooperation and Education" are the three key components in reaching young and seasoned drivers alike.
HOW: Car show is open to all makes and models. Advance registration is $15 (through January 22). Registration on the day of the show is $20. Registration is from 8AM - 12NOON, judging 12NOON - 1 PM and awards will be presented at 3 PM. Registration forms can be printed by visiting

WALK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE AT THE ARTFUL SAVANNAH MALL
An inspiring, out-of-the-box mural project begins at Savannah Mall during the weekend of May 2-May 3, 2009. The public is invited to watch as murals are painted to decorate the corridors in fairly rapid succession, beginning with 2 original designs in the Soft Play area near Burlington Coat Factory and 4 different, but equally unique, designs near Dillard’s department store. The murals are original designs by the students of the SCAD Illustration Department.
*THE SCAD MURAL PROJECT*
Located throughout the mall, the bold murals will cover floor to ceiling (12 feet) public spaces, and will vary from 18 feet to 37 feet wide. The art pieces include fun-to-whimsical as well as dark and sci-fi-esque art topics. The sketching and grid work began inside Savannah Mall on Sunday, April 19th. The artist of each mural design is leading a team of illustrators, about 5 per team, to complete each project piece.
