Join AWWIN and others for a 5K walk at 2 PM, Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Savannah Mall.  The goal?  To educate and empower women in the community and assist the plight of eradicating breast cancer.

"AWWIN Thinking Pink" is a new Breast Cancer Walk designed to assist low income women in the areas of: access to treatment; support services; screening; education and awareness.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer found in women and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S. ( WebMD Health News ).

- Every 3 minutes, there is a new diagnosis of invasive breast cancer

- A woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime

- Every 13 minutes, a life is lost to breast cancer

- White, non-Hispanic women are more likely to develop breast cancer but African-American women are more likely to die from it.

- Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths among this group.

Screenings (CDC) -- Deaths from breast and cervical cancers could be avoided if cancer screening rates increased among women at risk. Deaths from these diseases occur disproportionately among women who are uninsured or under insured. Mammography and Pap tests are underused by women who have no source or no regular source of health care, women without health insurance, and women who immigrated to the United States within the past 10 years.
