A HIVE OF FUN AT THE ULTIMATE YARD SALE AND BOY SCOUTS’ RACE CAR DERBY AT SAVANNAH MALL
SAVANNAH, Georgia (March 17, 2009) -- Getting a reputation as THE neighborly convening place, on Saturday, March 21 (7 AM - Noon) Savannah Mall will host 100 vendors in the Bass Pro parking lot for the Savannah Morning News "Ultimate Yard Sale." Inside the Boy Scouts of America's Council Pinewood Derby competition will be underway, beginning at 12:30 PM in Center Court.
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA'S PINEWOOD DERBY
Now in its 59th year, the lively Cub Scout tradition demonstrates what a father/son or mother/son team can accomplish with a 5-ounce block of wood racing car, originality and a little knowledge about axle speed.
"We will have approximately 150 Scouts and over 200 family members watching the event," states Gavin E. Albury, Field Director in Savannah. "It is a chance for Cub Scouts who won in their Packs and Districts to come to the Council race and become the overall Pinewood Derby guru," states Albury.
"The Council Pinewood Derby is the finale of all Derbies within our 11-county service area." The Savannah-based Council includes the Georgia counties of Bryan, Bulloch, Candler, Chatham, Effingham, Evans, Liberty, Long, Screven, Tattnall, and Toombs.

ABOUT THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA'S PINEWOOD DERBY
The Pinewood Derby began in Manhattan Beach, California, from the idea of a Cub Scout father, Don Murphy. Murphy and the Management Club at a company called North American Aviation, where he worked in 1953, pushed his idea forward. Since its beginnings an estimated 43 million sons and fathers (mostly) have participated.
"I wanted to devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship through competition," writes Murphy. "I'd made models of airplanes, cars, boats, and any number of other structures and remembered the pleasure I got out of doing it," he said.

THE BUDWEISER CLYDESDALES
The Budweiser Clydesdales have been the symbol of Anheuser-Busch for more than 75 years. They were formally introduced on April 7, 1933, to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition for beer. August A. Busch Jr. and Adolphus Busch III. presented a hitch of horses to their father to celebrate the day. To their father's delight, the hitch thundered down Pestalozzi Street carrying the first case of post-Prohibition beer from the St. Louis brewery.
More Clydesdale facts from Anheuser-Busch:
- Duke, Captain, Mark and Bud are just a few of the names given to the Budweiser Clydesdales. Names are kept short to make it easier for the driver to give commands to the horses during a performance.
- The traveling hitches make more than 500 appearances annually.
- Ten Clydesdales travel with each hitch. Two are alternates.
- Clydesdales are given short names, such as Duke and Bud, to make commands easier for the driver.
- The first television ad featuring the Budweiser Clydesdales aired in 1956
DALMATIANS TOO! A CLYDESDALE'S BEST FRIEND
The Budweiser Dalmatian, a Clydesdale's best friend, travels with the hitch. The Dalmatian is perched atop the wagon, seated next to the driver. The Dalmatian breed is known as coach dogs, because they ran between the wheels of coaches or carriages and were companions to the horses. The Dalmatians have traveled with the Clydesdale hitches since the 1950s.
