WALK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE AT THE ARTFUL SAVANNAH MALL
Quickly earning a reputation as a happy, artful place, Savannah Mall and the student illustrator's club at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) have chosen to walk on the bright side, together. Art students are bringing their creative, youthful energy and Savannah Mall is opening up new opportunities for student illustrators to showcase their great talents and works. "The brilliant art created by these very talented illustrators offers more reasons than ever before for people to leave their worries behind and come stroll together in the cool, safe corridors of Savannah Mall. We are proving here that some of the best things in life are free," shares Ms. Crystal.
ART GALLERY BY SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN ILLUSTRATORS
"We learned with the first exhibit -- "Show Me the Munny"--that the customers are thrilled to have art and SCAD here on the Southside. " comments Ms. Crystal. Savannah Mall's new SCAD gallery is located near the 24-Hour Family Fitness Center, between Customer Service and Burlington Coat Factory on the first level. At the end of May, the SCAD Illustration Department will be hosting their Senior Show at the Savannah Mall. Seniors in the Illustration program will feature a number of pieces from their collection of artwork.
*THE SCAD MURAL PROJECT*
Located throughout the mall, the bold murals will cover floor to ceiling (12 feet) public spaces, and will vary from 18 feet to 37 feet wide. The art pieces include fun-to-whimsical as well as dark and sci-fi-esque art topics. "I have tried to fit the lighting and designs to certain areas," explains the attentive marketer. "The fun, kid-like designs will go near the children's soft play area." The first in the series will be four murals near Dillard's department store. An additional two murals will be featured in the interior corridors near Burlington Coat Factory. The sketching and grid work began inside Savannah Mall on Sunday, April 19th. The artist of each mural design is leading a team of illustrators, about 5 per team, to complete each project piece. The painting will start this weekend -- May 2-May 3. The public is invited to watch the work in progress.
*SAVANNAH MALL SEEKS OUT THE ILLUSTRATORS*
Inspired by the spontaneity and fun of the Sidewalk Art Festival, Senea Crystal presented the project concept to her friend, Julie Lieberman, a professor of illustration art at SCAD. "I wanted something similar to the Sidewalk Art, but permanent. Part of the excitement is seeing the work in progress," Ms. Crystal states. "When I pitched this to the illustration department students, the only limitations I gave were that the designs must be PG, because we're a family mall, and nonpolitical. I did not want any one part of our community offended. Other than that, the designs were fair game. My commitment was that anything and all would be considered. If I have the wall space, I'll feature an approved design". The goal is to invite students each year to submit new designs. The current murals will decorate the corridors until next year. "The art will always be new and exciting and a great way to showcase an up-and-coming group of SCAD artists!" Ms. Crystal shares.
Savannah Mall's commitment as a team playing, good neighbor is earning the southside mall a reputation as THE community gathering place for feel-good, family friendly happenings in south Savannah.
"Personally and in business, these are times when everyone should be thinking more creatively. What better way than through fun, energizing, inspiring art to show Savannah Mall's commitment to that end," concludes Ms. Crystal.
